Sociology students formed into Houses named after pioneers in Sociology - Comte, Spencer, Durkhiem and Weber
Objectives
· To make the students more familiar with the traditions of Sociological thought by bringing them under the house system named after founding fathers.
· To facilitate a conducive environment for deliberations and discussions among the students on socially relevant issues with the theoretical understanding.
Strategies
The plan of action was to conduct all the association activities on the base of the house system. A list of all the students was prepared and then they were divided into different houses using lottery method. It was made mandatory that all the houses will have captains from MA II year and Vice captain from III BA. Thus in each house there were approximately 50 students working under the co-ordination of the PG students.
Our Weekly notice board
The aim
The student notice board was to be updated with information which will help the students in creating sociological imagination and to provide the students a food for thought social consciousness

The work
Each house was given the responsibility for maintaining the students' notice board on a weekly basis. Each of the houses competed for making the notice board look the most attractive and at the same time informative and socially relevant. Posters, Paintings & Articles relating to Social Issues like Road Safety measures, Dowry System, Gender discrimination, Suicide, Unemployment, Terrorism, and Corruption were displayed on the notice board.
News Analysis
The aim
The intrahouse competition was based on the themes selected by the students. The students themselves put forth the idea that they need to discuss on the current issues which need to have a lot of deliberations .So the aim of the programme My news of the week is to conduct a competition every week in which the students were ask to report a news from any mass media, giving their own interpretation to it.
The work
From each group a student volunteered to present the news. In one of the competition held The student representative of Comte Group presented the news report on the sexual harassment of women in Kerala and the need for more foolproof laws and stringent actions from civil society. The volunteer from the Durkheim group made the presentation on the havoc and the helplessness of the Bomb blast victims at Bombay and illustrated on the negligence of the bureaucracy towards human life. A representative of the Spencer group presented the issue of the road accidents particularly in the context of the pathetic condition of the road. The price was won by the student form the Max Weber group who invited the attention towards the Nelson Mandela International day on July 18 for freedom, Justice and democracy.
Film Review
The aim
The students were asked to prepare a critical review of socially relevant movies .The movies are the reflection of the reality and the perceptions of these realities vary from individual to individual. So students organized a competition on reviews of films in order to inculcate a sense of real life exposure amidst their hectic and dry academic endeavours.
The work
The competition was conducted after all the houses decided to make review on each film.In one such competition the Comte house chose Urumi,the Spencer on Kerala Café , Durkheim house on 'Arabikatha' and Weber on 'Pranchiyettan and the Saint'
Debate
The aim
In the context of the increasing formality and alienation experienced in the urban industrial society the human life is becoming highly insignificant .People care the needy only when they are dead and whether offer a peaceful death to a suffering soul is also widely debated in the mass media. As student of Sociology its high time that we had a heated debate on whether it is inevitable in critical situations or should be avoided, sharing the notion that God alone can take away the life.
The Activity
Students divided into two groups on the basis of the strong sentiments they shared on the viability and inevitability of euthanasia. Many students took to the side of those who wanted to regard human life as precious and wanted to take every possible action to ban it. They alleged that it is a crime like homicide and laws should be made more stringent.
Socius-The Manuscript Magazine
The Aim
Socius is a student produced Arts and Literary journal of our department published once a year. This year also we have attempted to showcase the best of original student works that includes art,fiction, poetry and prose.
The work
Sharon Benedict III DC student was elected as the editor of the Socius and she was assisted by a team of dedicated and talented students who have made very attempt to choose the best from among the submissions this year. The entire student community has poured their heart and soul into this endevour .
