ACTIVITIES OF THE DEPARTMENT 2010-11

30^th June: English association inauguration by Shri. Mohana Varma , eminent Malayalam writer, followed by Fresher's day programmes organized by II and III yr students( English Literature and Communicative English)

8^th July: Eng department handed over the staff association charge to the Home Science department. The function also witnessed Felicitation of PhD holders by the staff association.

10^thJuly: Teresian alumni meet was conducted on this day. Sr. Christabelle, our beloved Principal, presided over the function and the chief guest was Mayor. Prof. Mercy Williams.

21st July: English association and the poetry club together conducted the poetry writing competition in which 50 students participated for English and Malayalam Poetry writing competition.

4^th: Aug A talk was conducted on Literary theory resourced by Dr. Prasanth Kumar of the Sanskrit University, Kalady.

6^thSept: Teresian Rural Outreach Programme (TROP) activities: Students of III yr Communicative English visited the Little Flower Convent, Palliport to teach students of class 1-7 as a part of TROP activities.

8^th Sept: Innovative curriculum: III yr literature students were taken to Folklore Museum , Thevara as part of a study on Indian Aesthetics.

13^th Sept: A talk was conducted on Literary theory, resourced by Retd. Prof Jayaram C. of Sacred Heart's college, Thevara.

12th Nov : Release of the second volume of the Teresian Journal of English Studies (TJES) by Prof. N Madhukar Rao, Prof. of English and Prof. V. Nithyanantha Bhat, Prof. of English.

FACULTY ACHIEVEMENTS 2010-11

Dr. Tessy Anthony attended the Eighth International Humanities Conference held at University of California, Los Angeles, from 28^th June to 2^nd July. A paper titled ''The Ecological Philosophy of Denise Leverton" was presented during the conference. A paper titled "Decoding Advertising Story Telling: Children Subjects or objects" was also published in an international journal The Worcester Journal(Spring)

Talk on "Creative Writing" delivered by Smt. Preeti Kumar at NSS College, Cherthala in connection with their UGC aided Add-on course in English.

Dr. Latha Nair attended National Seminar on Voices from the New Millennium Writers organized and conducted by the Dept. of English and Research Centre, Sarah Tucker College, Tirunelveli. She was the resource person and presented a paper entitled "Language in contemporary Indian writers with special reference to Arundhati Roy".

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS 2010-11

June 30:Angela Parveen and Maria Rajan Thaliath (III yr English) won second place in the "Ecology and Poetry" competition conducted by the dept of English, Hindi and Malayalam of St.Xavier's college Aluva.

15^th-16^th July: III Communicative English students attended an intercollegiate workshop on Media Writing at Bharatmatha College, Thrikkakara.

29^th-30^th July: II MA English Litearture students attended a UGC sponsored national seminar on Aesthetics- Eastern and Western organized by the PG department of English , Deva Matha College, Kuravilangad, Kottayam.

5^th Aug: Preetica Biswas (IIDC Communicative English): Third Prize for Inter-collegiate Swimming Relay.

13^th Aug: Union Elections were held and the students elected from the English department are:

Sharmila Nair (II English Literature): Arts Club Secretary

Saniya M (II Communicative English) : Student Editor

Henna Davis (III Communicative English) : III DC representative

13^th Aug: Anice Vijayakumar of III English Literature held an exhibition of her paintings in the College auditorium.

18^th Aug: Henu George, Merin Ann Paul and Diya Meriam (Ist Communicative English) won the first place in 'Creativity' competition conducted by the Dept of Commerce, St. Teresa's College.

17^th Aug: Athulya Varghese, Amala Paul, Zuhra Kensha, Parween N A and Nikitha Shaji Thomas (II Communicative English) won the first place in the "Best Gang" Competition conducted by the Club FM 94.3 in association with the Hero Honda Pleasure.

18^th Aug: Bibitha V Bobby, Namratha M Shenoy , Ammu Maria Tomy and Srilakshmi T R secured the third place in Dhoom 3 dance competition (All Kerala) held at Rajiv Gandhi Indoor Stadium, Ernakulam.

19^th Aug: I DC English Literature secured the first position in Kannan Devan Nature Club Pookalam competition held in connection with college Onam celebrations.

19^th Aug: Mridula Murali (III DC Communicative English) was crowned "Ona Thilakam" for the college Onam celebrations.

20^th Aug: Radhalakshmy (II MA English Literature) participated in the Dissertation, Presentation Competition conducted by the MG university at Deva Matha College, Kuruvilangad. She won the second prize for the dissertation titled "Accepting the Benign Indifference: Existentialism Vs Absurdim in the Albert Camus "The Outsider".

7^th Sept: Prizes won for the 'Nutrition Week' Competition held by the Home Science department

Prerna Sharma (IDC Communicative English) : Nutri girl contest- First Runner up.

Lakshmi Menon (IDC Communicative English) : Nutri girl contest- Second Runner up.

Zoya Azeem (IIDC Communicative English) : Healthy Snack recipe competition- First Prize
